closet, wardrobe, organization, tour, clothing, hanging shelf, boots, shoes, bags, hangers,

Way back in November I had several bloggers share their closet organizing tips for that month's Q+A session. Now it's my turn! So whether you want some tips on organizing your own closet, or just like a sneak-peek into a blogger's daily life, hope you enjoy!

Our bedroom has a built in closet. The doors are painted with chalkboard paint. You can see previous designs I've shared on Instagram here. This closet is shared with The Boy almost half and half; he's really nice and let's me have a bit more of the space (Thank you!). We also share a dresser, so I keep sweaters, jeans and intimates there. Still, using space wisely is must in any closet, especially a shared one! Ultimately, a second (hanging) bar or shelving might help in the lower half of the closet, but here are some other tricks I use to help save space.

Having your clothes in some sort of organization will help make your morning routine faster. Some people organize by color or even arm length. I organize by type of clothing. From the center to the closet wall I have dresses, skirts, pants, blouses,  and lastly blazers and vests.  If you have enough of any one type of clothing, additionally organizing by a second such as color, might help.

This hanging shelf from Ikea currently houses my hats, purses and shoes. Honestly, people keep giving me hats (thank you all!), so my collection might be on the verge of having out grown its space soon. Still, this is a great way to see them. After all, out of site; out of mind and hats have a hard enough time making it into an outfit as it is. The last two shelves are for shoes- my flats (which I live in so long as snow isn't on the ground!) and then heels hang over the last, lipped shelf. this frees up space on the closet floor. closet, wardrobe, organization, tour, clothing, hanging shelf, boots, shoes, bags, hangers,

Next to the hanging shelf is our only other Ikea purchase, this belt organizer. Since it hangs sideways to save space, I try to make sure less used items (like my vintage aprons or summer silk scarves) are hung towards the back. Currently, winter scarves hang in the middle section, but will be rotated when it starts to get warmer. Belts are seem to be part of a de facto uniform for me, so they get the prime, front section.

Using clip hangers for skirts and jeans is another great organizing tip. To save space, I usually hang two skirts (or pants) on each hanger. These hangers also come with little hooks attached that are meant to hang another hanger on, thus saving space. When hanging up pants, I usually hang them upside down, clipping at the leg holes. By making sure all for leg seams are aligned, this will help to keep the crease of a dress pant and wrinkles out!

As mentioned earlier, some of the space in the lower half of the closet is essentially getting wasted because there's no shelving. Still, the floor space is premium parking, as it were. This is where I keep my boots, hamper, hat box and various other items. All boots stand upright on their own because an empty wine bottle gets put into each boot. This helps it keep its shape better and allows it to be free standing. Under the belts is our hamper, which is a great help to keeping things tidy! In the far corner is where bags are placed. If need be extra items can be store within the bags. I am also currently keeping my two petticoats in a plastic bag in the corner. Not an ideal home for them yet, but their volume makes storage trickier.

Got some great tips to share? I'm all ears, so let the ideas roll and leave a comment!

  1. You are so organized- this is great! I recently got one of those Ikea belt organizers for my scarves & hung it in the bathroom, but haven't filled it yet. We also had to get an Ikea wardrobe for my husband because there was no room in the closet for him- You are nice to share! ;)

    1. Well, I moved into his house when we got married, so couldn't just kick him out of it... he did have to stop hanging his t-shirts and start folding them up for the dress though.... oh dear!

      How nice your husband :D

  2. I'm super jealous you have a walk in!! My space is overflowing with stuff and it seems so hard to organize. I love that ikea seperator, and hanging a few items on a hanger is smart. I have the tendency to hang things by colour too, skirts first from black to bright then dresses from black to bright

  3. So fun to get a peak into your closet! The wine bottle trick is SUCH a good idea, and I definitely need to try that. Also, I'm in love with the chalkboard doors!

    1. The chalkboard doors were pretty easy to do (I'm not much for DIYs really) and definitely fun.

  4. Okay that wine bottle idea is genius! I currently use rolled up newspaper in my boots but this sounds like a much better idea. Plus there is the goal of drinking more wine so I can hold up my boots! LOL At least that is what I will tell my husband ; )

  5. So cool to get a peek inside your closet! I'm one of those that organizes by type and color. I think it will be easier when I graduate and don't have to divide my clothes between two closets!

  7. I'd kill for a closet like this again. We have tiny Victorian closets in San Francisco, it's so sad. In Vegas I used to have an amazing walk in closet, it was a dream!

  8. I am one of those people who organized both on color and by type of clothing, haha. Your closet looks really organized, and i too believe that having a system really helps when you're getting dressed :) one more thing: I use the belt organizer for my summer scarfs ^^ It's the the best thing to have to help me organize I think! xo

  9. That chalkboard is genius! Love love love! <3 I envy your organizational skills. Haha. It looks like you have a pretty small space to work with, but you do such an excellent job of using what little space you have. I have a teeny tiny closet and it was a nightmare trying to find everything. Eventually I ordered a standing closet and I've never been happier. I still wish I had a bigger closet, though. Hehe.

    1. The chalkboard paint has been so fun, and it doesn't rub off on the clothes like I feared it might.

  10. I too love the chalkboard painted doors! :D OMG your closet is so much more organized than mine. :D I desperately need that belt organizer.

    Thanks for sharing!

  11. I love peeking into people's closets, is that creepy? I'm also someone that has to have an insanely organized closet, it's one of the first things I sorted in my new house! Hanging shelves inside a closet are a great space saver. I wonder if it would be worth some stackable plastic drawers on the closet floor? Also, I noticed you didn't really discuss the top shelf, but looks like you have some sweaters stacked there? I maximize that space with square baskets turned facing me (so a bit hangs over the edge). Great spot to store bulky layers/scarves!

    1. I love peekiing into people's closets and homes too :D

Ha! Above is where we keep our suitcases and THe Boy was keeping his sweaters. You can't tell in the photo, but the closet is very tall. the shelf is so high I can't even reach it, so forget about it most of the time. Luckily the Boy is tall too.
