What I Wore: Jeans (Gap), Jacket (Similar Here), Sweater (Similar Here), Scarf (Similar Here), Necklace (Similar Here), Shoes (Old Navy)
I grew up in a town of about 5,000 and many might feel that is small town, but the West some days seems like a mighty big place, and when driving through it you'll find these far-flung, isolated tiny towns: just a store- or two-and a post office and a school if they're lucky. Iris Dement wrote a song about towns like this, "Our Town." In the refrain she croons "the sun's setting down on our town," and I wonder if anyone who lives in these small-and-dwindling places feels that. The little town of Bearcreek always strikes me like that, yet it was once a booming town, one of the biggest in Montana. Then it experienced one of the worst mining disasters in America; it left them a devastated population, both emotionally and in numbers. Today, it's biggest boasts are a bar with pig races and these ruins of a mine (you can read more about the disaster in the book
Goodbye Wifes and Daughters). Every time we pass it, I get a sense of melencholy for the lonely buildings I knew even before I knew their sad history. Still, there is a beauty in the abandoned sometimes.
The somber feeling of the place seemed to fit the mood of the weekend, in which the weather had turned grey and rainy. While I'm sure it will warm up, it awoke a feeling of autumn in my heart (or is it the fact that school starts tomorrow that's doing that?!). My tweed jacket always seems perfect for such a fall mood. I rather liked the scarf too- seemed a bit Diane Keaton, a bit seventies-and-menswearish. Or maybe it is just that I'm getting older; scarves seems like something Adults with a capital A would wear somehow? Or maybe that's just me. Would you wear a printed scarf like this?

It always ushers in Fall for me however when it is wonderfully hot outside today I'm happy to say I think and hope for my sake that Autumn is still at least a full month (if not more! fingers crossed) away. I don't mind Autumn...but I hate what follows it, especially after last year's never ending winter.

Wrapping it into a rope like thing definitely helped. I like the patterns on square scarves but they are hard to wear...

Although it is quite sad what happened to it, I have to agree there's much beauty in the old abandoned buildings. was it a fun little day trip for you guys or is that nearby? I hope your first day having your own classroom went great for you Kristian!! i'm excited to hear more as you get in the swing of things. and I agree, the scarf adds a great touch.

I live in a former coal mining part of my state as well, and there are so many towns like this here. It's always so crazy to think about these places once being booming towns and how much the coal industry brought to them.

I've never worn a scarf that way, but I should- I have so many! This makes a unique photo backdrop, and even better that you knew the backstory. I grew up in a super tiny town in the woods with a post office, tiny store, and school. Apparently it was booming long before my time with movie theaters, restaurants, and such- it was so hard for me to imagine!
