What I Wore: Striped Shirt (Popbasic), Silk Shirt (Popbasic; Similar Here), Jeans (Gap), Shoes (Modcloth), Bracelet (Popbasic; Similar Here)

There are some outfits you only realize later that you really love. When putting this one, it reminded me of an outfit I'd hated from high school. I'd been lucky enough to get a scholarship to go to a summer institute hosted at Northwestern University near Chicago. That was Big Time News for a Small Town Girl. One of the security measures though, was you needed to provide a "headshot" photo. It was a theater camp, so you'd think it was for auditions or something. No. It was for giving to the cops if they couldn't ever find you.

Well.

Let me tell you, I never wanted to be unaccounted for because I hated my headshot and never wanted it to see the light of day. My father- who, as long time readers may remember, is a photographer who's learned what's enduring when it comes to fashion sense - insisted I be photographed wearing a collared shirt under and oversized top. Quelle  horreur my seventeen year old self thought (in retrospect, a very effective technique for keeping me in line though!)

Now, my 29 year old self loves that style, but when donning the clothes, I still felt like things were a big baggy- and not in that stylish Pinterest way but a I-am-five-and-playing-dress-up-with-mom's clothes way. So, I took a cue from Rita of Fashion Pas, and knotted the shirt.  The Boy was unsure about this (Note to Self: The Boy is great to ask if you need affirmation of a decision already made. Not so great if you need an actual opinion about clothes. His opinion is biased), so we photographed it both ways- and it got worn both ways too. So, now I'll ask you To Knot or Not To Knot? That is the question.

  2. I prefer the knot. Gives more shape to the outfit.

LOL I too only ask my husband to confirm what I already know.

  3. I love your dad's fashion tip! :) I'm loving it with the knot- what a good idea to give extra shape to layers!

  4. It looks cute both ways, but I think the knot really makes the outfit :)

  5. I think I like it best without the knot, though if it looks more baggy in real life than in this picture, I understand why you would go with the knot. Great look!

  7. I prefer the proportions sans-knot - but I guess I am in the minority here! LOL - love this casual preppy look both ways though.

  8. Ah! Got a real surprise when I saw my name there :) glad I've inspired you too! I love the knotted version but I can see what Rebecca means about the proportions. I wonder how it would look with the shirt tucked in and the knotted top? :)

    1. Well, I liked your insta with the wanderlust shirt knotted :)

I'll have to try it with it tucked in too. A good idea, Rita!

  9. I think that little knot is genius! I'm gonna have to try this. I really do love the shirt under the t-shirt look but I can never seem to pull it off. You had me chuckling about the "not in the Pinterest kind of way"...oh so true! As always, you look chic and lovely!

  10. I like it both ways, but I do think I like the knotted version more! But I'm a little biased on that decision because I've *really* been digging longer shirts under cropped sweaters recently. And I ask my youngest brother his opinion on my outfits because he's brutally honest, and when he gives me a negative response I'm always so confused. Haha because I still like the look and I want him to see the light! Ah, what do boys know anyway ;)
