Fall List

fall wishlist, pencil skirt, oxford shoes, jeans, sweater, shirt, white, clothes,

Since starting to blog about personal style I've gotten really into the idea of the perfect wardrobe. Everything works with one another, a defined style is present, and you have the clothes you need for the weather and events you need clothes for. Others have called it a functional wardrobe, or a remixing one, or a wardrobe with a good foundations or great staples. However you want to label it, mine is definitely still a work in progress. Last spring, we talked about the 20 Basics Every Woman Needs, and I'll freely admit- I don't have all those. You have to wait for the right item to come to you; that's my feeling on the matter. No buying something just "good enough." A clothing staple is something meant to be worn again and again; that isn't going to happen if it is not The One. As fall has come around, I've been looking a little harder at what my wardrobe lacks for the season, and made my To Watch For List:

Pencil Skirts- These might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I think a good pencil skirt can be really versatile- good for work with a blazer, and good for day out when paired with a slouchy sweater. I've been on the look out for one with a bit of color ever since trying one via Flock Together (as you can see here and here), but a houndstooth one looks fun too. You just want to make sure the skirt is tight enough to show you're a woman but loose enough to show you're a lady, if you know what I mean.
Oxfords- Oxfords seem to communicate a certain gamine, almost tomboyish quality that I love. There is a deeper reason behind these making the list though. As the weather has turned and socks are becoming more and more what my chilly toes desire I noticed....  I only have ballet flats. To be totally fair, I also own a few heels and there are boots. Out of these though, only boots really work for wearing socks and they sadly aren't always practical to wear. So- let the shoe search begin!
Jeans- As of writing this list, I got so inspired I actually did go out and hunt down my own pair of jeans (From Gap, as seen here), so perhaps this making the list is a bit misleading. Jeans are one of those things, I think almost everyone needs in their wardrobe. But they are so frustrating to shop for. They all look alike folded on the shelfs and even unfolded in your hands. It is a mystery whether they will work for you until you put them on and mystery again whether this will all change in the wash. I tend to favor skinny jeans, but what you want is to find a cut and size that fit you.
Chunky Knit, White Sweater- the possibilities of a sweater like this seem endless, don't they? It is the epitome of the phrase sweater weather and will keep you snug all through the winter and spring too. A thicker knit with a neat pattern is timeless, and white will go with everything. I'm on the look out for one meant to end at my waist, rather than my hips or bum. The latter are more common but with the former, can't you just see the layers merrily peeking out?
A Silky, White shirt- Admittedly this is a basic that will do well in all seasons (and perhaps would be most used in summer), but I've never found The One yet. I want a button up, but for the material to be soft and to drape well. I also want one that is not sheer, which has been the sticking point for many an almost-purchase for me. I've nothing against the sheer trend, but feel an opaque, solid shirt would be of more benefit in the colder months.

What about you? What are you on the look-out for?

  1. Pencil skirts = YES! and I have been looking for the perfect cream knit sweater for a few years now but still no luck! I spotted this one (http://www.massimodutti.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product/duttibe/fr/30220002/724510/2730028/PULL%2BMAXI%2BTRESSES) from Massimo Dutti in stores a few weeks ago, and am slowly getting convinced that this is The One for me. I also still need an extra pair of jeans, as I only have one but everything at it's time :) xo

  2. You might check Joe Fresh. They have great white shirts and I picked up a silk one recently.

    What do I need? Nothing.

Totally different from what I want though. : )

    That is the truth.

    1. Thank you for the tip!

Haha- yes, need and want. My own list is probably a bit more want than need. I won't go naked this winter no matter what!

  6. I enjoyed reading your basics post a while back and it's fun to read follow up posts like this one. Clarks makes awesome oxfords, comfortable and slick looking and really durable.(i have a pair of black leather ones from them I love.). As for sweaters Colombia makes some nice, thick ones, I know they aren't a stylish brand but they make great basics that last.
