What I Wore: Sweater (Similar Here), Shirt (Similar Here), Jeans (Gap), Shoes (Modcloth), Trench Coat (ASOS), Bracelet (Popbasic)

So there's been a lot of talk around the blogosphere lately about styles changing and evolving. Maybe it is the newish minimalist "trend" that we seen in talk of "French Closets" and "wardrobe capsules." Or maybe it is the changing season, or maybe it is something else. All I know is that I've definitely been feeling that shift in my own life (and closet) too.

I suspect what it really is, is growing older and moving into new phases of life combined with all the previously mentioned suspects too. This seemed to crystalize the other day, when I was wearing this. My younger sister was in town to visit, and we'd done lunch. Sitting across from my stylish, hip sister, it came to me, that we, who've been constantly mistaken for twins, didn't really look much alike. She was in a t-shirt and jeans- everything casual and cool. I was in the above. Was the grey and white I wore dowdy or boring, I suddenly wondered. But 28 is not 25, though some days that distance is less far than others. What my comfort, career, and life needs from its wardrobe is different than hers and different than what is was three years ago too. (And, of course, personal style always counts!)

Have you been seeing a shift in your wardrobe? Why? Towards what? I'd love to hear!

  1. This outfit seems to me, very you. At least the you you present online. I like it a lot! And I know the feeling, my sisters and I are complete opposites in style (personalities too), but it's always a nice moment for reflection because it puts things into perspective. And I think changing your style gradually is a necessary part of evolving!

  2. I've definitely been leaning towards the minimalist trend. I think it has to do with straying away from my college wardrobe and growing into a style that looks more classic and put together. I don't think your outfit is boring at all, you look very neat.

  4. Style definitely changes at we age, and as it should -- things I loved at 18 aren't the best look for a 23-year-old chick. But other things can effect you as well -- fashion is an outward expression of personality, a way we communicate with the world. So it only makes sense that it changes with time, with feelings, on any given day. :)

  5. I always feel my tastes are changing. As I grow older, my preferences have changed and so I'm not so surprised that my style does too. In fact, I find it funny that things I used to say no to before are things I'm saying yes to now. Keeping a blog is a great tracker of that fact and I adore that.
Love your look. It's a great classic outfit!

  8. I think everyone who truly has their own style will evolve into that style. And in my own humble opinion, class is better than cool, anyday. ;)
Lately I've felt like, in some ways, my style has changed extremely. Sometimes I feel like there's nothing in my closet that actually feels like me. So, slowly, I've been picking up items that do fit with my style, and finding new ways to style old clothes. While I still love classy, elegant, fancy looks, I find myself drawn towards relaxed, boho, casual things. Loose sweaters, booties, earthy colors.

  9. Yes, I've definitely been feeling that in my own life, but have been stuck in some kind of weird rut that I have not been happy with. Pretty sure is has had something to do with the extreme cold and only longing to pile on layers. We shall see what spring brings on...though I have a feeling I will always be drawn towards 60s dresses more than anything, haha. You look so chic here. I wish I could pull of the minimalist thing half as well.

That photo of the moon is fantastic!

  12. My wardrobe has evolved enormously over the last 10 or so years. It took me years (YEARS!) to develop a professional wardrobe that felt comfortable and "me," so I didn't feel like I was playing dress-up every day, but I also commanded respect in my workplace and didn't feel awkward or out-of-place. And it's take me DECADES to learn how to dress my body shape. Heck, I'm still learning. The constant throughout is that I'm not happy being boring, and I love adding that extra touch to an outfit to make it special, to make the look my own. I'm not satisfied with just being OK; I want it to be extraordinary. I'd rather shoot for the moon and fail than go with the "safe" choice. I admire people (like you!) who have a consistent, classic, sophisticated look. But that's just not me! And I think I'm finally OK with being the loud weirdo instead :)
