What I Wore: Skirt (Hell Bunny), Bracelet (Popbasic; Similar Here), Petticoat (Similar Here), Sweater (Similar Here), Shoes (Old Navy)
So, this is what I wore over Easter. To be fair though, it was also what I wore the weekend before with nothing more special than a visit to a bookstore on the slate that day. Another blogger, the vintage-inspired Katie of Butterflies love Snapdragons, writes occasionally of people who ask her "where goes to dress like that?" As if one must have an occasion to dress in vintage or vintage inspired clothing, or, well... to dress any way. She dresses for her life because she enjoys it, and though I'm not the same kind of committed (to the vintage look) as she is, I really empathize with that sentiment. Dress to make yourself happy.
That said, as a blogger, I find sometimes find myself putting off photographing this outfit or that one looking for a backdrop to suit the clothes, to tell a story. So while I might wear both this and an outfit with moccasins and cut-offs to the grocery store, I like them for the different stories they tell and strive to communicate that through the backdrop as well as the clothing. A bit hypocritical, and yet... Oh, how could I not wait for the right location with such an outfit? My new favorite! This backdrop, ironically, felt pretty perfect with it's brick and gorgeous black ironwork, but you see so little of it! It is actually a local hotel, The Chamberlin Inn; we stayed here for our honeymoon night, and it really is like no other place in Cody.
Do you ever feel insecure about the clothing you wear not fitting in with your community or have you been asked about it if your wardrobe does make you stand out? What about when it comes to the photos- do you like ones that tell a bit of a story or photo locations that are more revealing of the blogger's everyday activities?
Oh, that is the prettiest little entrance and brick wall! Finding interesting locations is something I'd like to do more of to, as you say, tell a bit more of a story. Unfortunately I usually end up just taking photos on our front step, haha.

another gorgeous look that is so you! I love a beautiful background for an outfit.....but often that doesn't have to be too complex, like you have here, the brick, lovely old door, the planter.....bringing out the simple pretty details of the surroundings is all you really need.

DeleteMost of my backgrounds are nature related since we have lots of nature, so it is silly but makes it harder to remember that simple works too! Good advice.

I wish I were able to scout locations and properly tell a story about each outfit I wear. Instead I find it difficult just to get photos of it in my backyard. It is all so time consuming. I'm toying with the idea of reducing the number of times I blog per week right now just so I can start to feel like I'm catching up. Right now Typepad where I host my blog through has had major issues and been down for almost 2 days so I can't even post if I wanted to. Right when I did my very first giveaway...typical!
At least I'm able to catch up on some of my favourite blogs : )

I've heard and seen a lot of bloggers reducing the number of times they post; I can see with so many social media outlets it is hard to keep readers who have the time for five or seven posts a week. I don't know, since I like all my topics and posts, but I've thought about it too.

Just looking at these photos I know how much you love this outfit. You look very confidant! And the first one is just too precious. I sometimes worry that my outfit and backdrop do not match, but when I'm almost out of time for a post deadline I have to go with what I have, which is usually a spot near my home in the countryside or near my college apartment in the city. I dress relatively classic and don't often seem out of place in my community, except for those times when I wear my bootcut jeans. I aaaaalways get comments on those, albeit for the most part positive ones! xo
Reply DeleteYou always have lovely backgrounds; they fit. Also, the part about the boot cut jeans made me smile. Here in Cowboy country they've always been pretty much standard. It's new things like skinny jeans or boyfriend jeans that are the rarer ones.

And I always find those questions funny too- why can't you just dress up for the joy of dressing up? But I suppose some people prefer not to stand out as much with their outfits, so I can understand that haha. And I always love how your backdrops go so well with your outfits- it gives it an editorial feel.

DeleteYou look amazing! I totally know what you're talking about- people comment on my outfits at work a lot because most of what I wear on the blog is what I wear to the office. Getting dressed is such a fun part of the day and having fun with outfits helps me have fun throughout the day- as weird as that may sound :) Your backdrops are always so perfect, I really need to leave my yard more often!

Oh I do love this skirt! It makes me smile and yes I get a ton of mean looks (especially from women) when I wear some clothes that they may not wear or approve of. I totally understand but I don't let it get to me... haters gonna hate am I right? Wear what you love and be happy.

I have definitely wondered f I would still be motivated to "dress up" if I didn't have an office job to go to ... On the weekends I dress very casual. I have a feeling my style might evolve into something different if I worked from home.
Reply DeleteSo when I moved after marrying, I was only substitute teaching for several months and my style definitely did change. I definitely now dress differently for weekends vs. weekdays vs. week nights, lol.

Reply DeleteI think you brought up an interesting point about telling a story through your clothes. I typically just shoot outfit photos wherever I happen to be, but when I have more time to thoughtfully choose a location I tend to love those photos the best!

Reply DeleteI worry a bit about dressing around my students. I want to look a little older, but not un-relatable. I own too much black, but don't want to make it look depressing. I also don't want to worry students who were raised with strict modesty rules- even though I don't agree with some of them. So, haven't really figured that out yet!
I'm not sure black nowadays usually reads as depressing, despite any mourning connotations- Black is the New Black and all that :)
