What I Wore: Shirt (New York and Company), necklace (Popbasic), skirt (thrifted at Red Light in Portland), Petticoat (Portland Boutique), Shoes (Montana Vintage)
Ah! The magic of clothes. I wore this basic look to work, but with the addition of a petticoat, and trading sensible flats for some blue sling-backs and I was ready for a date with the Boy! The florals felt just right for the springy weather we enjoyed throughout the week (oh, fickle Wyoming. We know snowstorms are not long in coming though.), and the entire thing had a bit of a fifties vibe that seemed all things feminine- perfect for a date!
Our night out was of the typical (photo shoot &) Dinner & A Movie variety. Amos took me to see Disney's The Great and Powerful Oz. Something you may or may not know about me, if I'm a HUGE Oz fan, especially the books. L. Frank Baum wrote 14 Oz books in total as well as a large number of other children's fantasies that all took place more or less in the same canon. After Baum's death, a series of other writers became "Oz Historians" and wrote a total of 40 Oz books that are considered canon. Sadly, most of the ones by other authors were not available to me as a kid, but the ones I could get my hands on- I devoured. I reread over and over. True Story- he librarians at the Public library commented on it when the rare occasion happened and I did not have even one Oz book among my 12 (our library's limit).
So you can imagine I was...curious, a little concerned even, about this latest Oz movie. Disney owns all the movie rights to all but the first book, and in the eighties did a very well-done adaptation of two of the books. That movie is the cult-classic Return to Oz. So, I knew they could do it justice, but wasn't sure if this newest film would. Well.... I liked parts. The climax was fun to watch. Most of the plot-line was ridiculous, and even my father- who is the most easy-going of film-patrons- said they needed somebody to go over their script with them. Also, I was not a fan of most of the CGI. It is a fantasy land, but it is not Who-ville; the plants are allowed to look real and not cartoony. Oh well. Maybe this film will spark some other little girl's interest in Oz, and she too will fall in love with reading by going Over The Rainbow to meet Dorothy Gale, Ozma of Oz, The Hungry Tiger, the Patchwork Girl, the Shaggy Man, and so many, many more!
Wasn't the CGI awful! I know they shot it in 3-D and we didn't go to 3-D so maybe that's why. But when he's holding the doll I could help but think, "Fake!" I dunno, my niece got really bored with it. I also found it slow. The only thing I really enjoyed was Zack Braff in the beginning lookin' all spiffy. :)

We saw it 2-D as well (#D gives me headaches), so maybe it does make a different, but it was very fake.

I know, right? Petticoats can be expensive. I found mine in Portland in the shopping area close to the Bagdad Theatre if you are in the Pacific Northwest. I think it was less than thirty.
DeleteKenneth and I went to see Oz last weekend and I too thought their script could have been more realistic. It was all so... not convincing to me. I don't know. The characters did not feel real, especially those of the witches. But I did love the river elfs! But that's just the kid in me I guess, haha.

Deletei actually liked the movie :) but i saw it in 3D. i feel like 3D has gotten much better it used to give me AWFUL headaches too but i started going again last year and it seems to be better!!!!! i also am just a HUGE james franco fan so i guess that was part of it :P

Reply DeleteHah, I was OBSESSED with the Oz books as a young girl, those were some of my very favorites. I was really looking forward to this movie but like you said, it was just....eh. I get really grump about all of the computer animation which seems to be a stand in for story these days and I was short of shocked by how jarring some of the animation was in this movie. (Oh, don't even get me started on the story line!) I sort of had an idea that it was going to be this awful, it did have James Franco in it. :P
Reply DeleteHow that so many people get headaches from 3d! I really thought I was the only one who had that problem, I end up with terrible eye pains and headaches that take hours to go away whenever I watch something in 3d.
Oh to the fashion! This skirt is so perfect for going to see Oz, I love the full skirt with the petticoats under, so much movement! It must have been really fun to walk around in this skirt.
Oh another Oz fan! So exciting! It is interesting to me too, how many people complain of headaches from 3D. Maybe that is part of why it has been several years and 2D still does not seem to be phasing out. (hope it never does!)

Deletehmm you got me there, I never read any of the books. I got a little too stuck on boxcar children and the hardy boys and nancy drew that i didn't explore much else. I LOVE this skirt on you as always & esp like the undersated elegance w/ the blue heels and white blouse.

I always love finding out what series or authors kids loved (though I suspect you probably devoured a good portion of the library. Not sure why but you've always struck me a reader. Maybe it is because you are in grad school. I've never asked what you are studying though!)

i LOVE the original Wizard of Oz. so naturally, i was excited yet apprehensive to see this new Oz film. i was really disappointed. the script was so cheesy, and i wasn't impressed with the visuals at all, which is sad because it had so much potential to be an AMAZING movie.
